povo Japan SIM users can claim 0.5GB of free data once a day by checking in with location on at a JR East station, up to 10 times (5GB) a month.
Check first: Needs a povo Japan SIM eSIM and a phone number from an eligible country (US, Canada, Mexico, South Korea, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Australia, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands or UK) for the sign-up SMS, and Japan SIM sign-up needs a credit card. Only works at designated JR East stations during their operating hours, with precise location on and Wi-Fi off. Not supported on Apple Watch (needs GPS). May be throttled during network congestion.

povo Data Oasis is a daily data top-up for anyone using povo's Japan SIM, the data-only eSIM povo2.0 sells to visitors to Japan. Log in to the Japan SIM website, tap the povo Data Oasis banner, agree to the location and terms prompts, and let the site check your location at one of the designated JR East stations. Popular ones include Tokyo, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ueno and Narita Airport Terminal 2 and 3, with dozens more on the full list covering much of Tokyo, Yokohama, Sendai, Niigata and beyond. A successful check-in adds 0.5GB of data valid for 24 hours, and you can do this once a day, up to 10 times a month, for 5GB total.
The service has been running since December 2025 at 21 stations and was extended indefinitely from February 2026, with no end date set. You need location services on with precise location allowed, and Wi-Fi switched off so the check runs on mobile data; it will not work on an Apple Watch, since it needs GPS.
Signing up for Japan SIM itself needs a credit card and a phone number from one of around 20 eligible countries for the verification SMS, including the US, UK, Australia and most of Western Europe and East Asia. It only works during station operating hours, and speeds can be throttled when the network is busy.
How to do it
- Sign up for povo's Japan SIM eSIM if you don't already have it (needs a credit card and a phone number from an eligible country for the verification SMS).
- Turn on precise location in your phone's settings for the browser or app you'll use, and switch Wi-Fi off.
- Log in to the Japan SIM website and tap the povo Data Oasis banner.
- Agree to the location use and Terms of Use prompts.
- Let the site check your location while you're at a designated JR East station, such as Tokyo, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ueno or Narita Airport Terminal 2/3.
- 0.5GB (valid 24 hours) is added automatically; repeat once a day, up to 10 times a month.
