What it does

A payment app to consider once you have the required Japanese mobile number. It is not a dependable arrival-day option for a visitor who only has an overseas number or a data-only travel eSIM.

PayPay’s service guide covers in-store payments, online payments and bill payments, alongside balance charging and identity verification. Treat these as separate features with their own requirements. Being able to register does not establish that every payment or funding method is available to you.

The catch

The official requirements specify a smartphone that can receive SMS and a Japanese mobile number; overseas mobile numbers cannot be used. Check supported payment methods before relying on the app at a shop. A tablet is not a substitute for the required phone setup.

Cost and plans

The directory’s Free label describes the consumer app, not free purchases. Funding, payment and other service conditions are explained in PayPay’s guide. Use those pages to check the method you intend to use rather than assuming an overseas card will work.

How to get started

  1. Read the official requirements and confirm you can receive SMS on a Japanese mobile number.
  2. Install the app and follow its account-registration instructions.
  3. Review available payment and charging methods, then check the merchant’s accepted payment options.
