Check first: Open-air, so less pleasant in extreme heat or cold. No towels provided. Closed on the museum's monthly maintenance day (2nd Tuesday most months; in Nov 2026 that moves to Nov 17-18).

The details

Ashiyu Terrace (足湯テラス) is a free hot-water footbath on the 6th floor of MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives, a cultural facility inside Takanawa Gateway City, right next to Takanawa Gateway Station on the Yamanote and Keihin-Tohoku lines. It is a semi-outdoor spot surrounded by greenery with open views over the rail tracks toward Shinagawa, one of Japan's busiest stations, which makes it a spot for trainspotting as well as soaking your feet.

Anyone can use it. MoN Takanawa's own site lists the building's general opening hours as 10:00 to 21:00, and says anyone can freely enter the building, with paid tickets only required for specific exhibitions and programs. The footbath terrace is listed under the museum's public spaces, not its ticketed exhibition spaces, so it needs no ticket and no booking. It has both a warm-water section and a separate cool-water section, so visitors can move between the two.

The catches: it is open-air, so it is less pleasant in the height of summer or the depths of winter. No towels are provided, so bring your own small towel or handkerchief to dry your feet. The museum closes on the second Tuesday of most months; in November 2026 that falls on the 17th, but the museum is swapping that closure to November 17 and 18 instead, so check the museum's own schedule page before a visit around those dates.

How to do it

  1. Ride the JR Yamanote or Keihin-Tohoku Line to Takanawa Gateway Station, or the Toei Asakusa Line or Keikyu Main Line to Sengakuji Station.
  2. Walk into Takanawa Gateway City and find MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives.
  3. Go up to the 6th floor and look for Ashiyu Terrace; no ticket or reservation is needed to use it.
  4. Bring your own small towel or handkerchief, since none are provided.
  5. Go any day between 10:00 and 21:00, but check the museum is not closed for its monthly maintenance day first.
